Frequently asked questions.
01What is Dearness Allowance (DA)?
Dearness Allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment allowance paid to Central Government employees and pensioners to mitigate the impact of inflation on their livelihoods. It is updated bi-annually (January and July).
02How is DA calculated?
DA is calculated as a percentage of your Basic Pay. The rate of DA is determined by the percentage increase in the 12-month average of the All India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers (AICPI-IW).
03Why does the DA rate reset to 0% with a new pay commission?
To prevent compounding inflation adjustments, the accumulated DA of the previous scale is merged into the basic pay when the new pay commission is implemented. As a result, the DA rate starts fresh from 0% in January 2026.
